Bitcoin quantum migration debate highlights risks to dormant tokens and network confidence

Crypto investor Nic Carter warned that a quantum attack on dormant Bitcoin addresses could undermine network confidence while migration plans pose recovery risks for legitimate coin owners.

Crypto investor Nic Carter outlined a worst-case quantum computing threat in an October 13 interview with Luke Martin, CryptoSlate reported. Carter warned that an attacker could compromise keys to dormant Bitcoin tokens and execute a sudden wave of transactions across 10 blocks. He stated that the synchronized movement of early coins could undermine trust in the Bitcoin network. [1]

The technical transition to safer signatures creates governance and recovery challenges alongside cryptographic upgrades, according to CryptoSlate. Glassnode analysis from May 20 identified 6.04 million BTC, representing 30.2 percent of the issued supply at that time, associated with public addresses. These legacy holdings face potential lockout if holders fail to migrate or prove ownership before quantum protections are implemented. [1]

Coinbase urged the Bitcoin community to begin quantum migration preparation immediately, Decrypt and 24/7 Wall St. both reported. The exchange noted that completing the transition could take years. As FTMQ Crypto reported earlier, academic researchers from four institutions previously developed a post-quantum security framework for Bitcoin layer-two payment channels on the Lightning Network. [5][6][11]

Capriole Chief Executive Officer Charles Edwards argued that developer consensus on a quantum migration strategy could serve as a major positive catalyst, CryptoRank, CryptoPotato, and Bitcoin Magazine all reported. Edwards projected that establishing a clear technical plan could spark a 50 percent increase in Bitcoin market prices. [2][3][4]
