Cryptocurrency markets fell sharply on Thursday following reports of a potential multibillion-dollar security breach involving Binance-linked wallets. Cointelegraph and CryptoSlate reported that Bitcoin dropped to an intraday low of $78,297 on Binance spot markets, while BNB fell over 6 percent. Cointelegraph and Bitcoin Magazine noted that the broader cryptocurrency market slid by 3.3 percent as news of the unauthorized wallet activity spread. [1][2][6]

Outlets offered varying figures regarding the size of the suspected exploit. Cointelegraph reported that blockchain security firm Blockaid identified approximately $3.3 billion in suspicious transfers. CryptoSlate stated that Binance is investigating a possible $2.8 billion breach. Meanwhile, TronWeekly placed the suspected breach at $5.57 billion, 24/7 Wall St. reported rumors of a $5.7 billion hack, and Bitcoin Magazine cited potential outflows of up to $5.8 billion. In response to the emergency, stablecoin issuers moved to mitigate damages. CryptoSlate and Bitcoin Magazine both reported that Tether and Circle froze between $1.8 billion and $2.39 billion in stablecoins tied to the suspicious transactions. CryptoSlate also noted that total crypto liquidations approached $1 billion as Bitcoin traded near $79,126. Binance stated on X that its security teams are actively investigating reports of a potential security issue. [2][6]

Binance was founded in 2017 by Changpeng Zhao to provide high-speed, low-cost cryptocurrency trading. The exchange relies on its native utility token, BNB, which offers trading fee discounts to users. As FTMQ Crypto reported earlier, overall Bitcoin volatility had declined to 46 percent in 2026, even as the asset experienced multiple extreme price moves throughout the year. [11][13]
