Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake urged the cryptocurrency industry on October 7, 2026, to prepare for potential artificial intelligence threats to core wallet security. CryptoSlate, The Block, Cryptopolitan, and Crypto Briefing all reported that Drake called for a bunker mode strategy to address risks associated with private key recovery. [1][2][3][4]
CryptoSlate reported that advances in mathematics by OpenAI prompted the warning regarding Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm signatures. Drake warned that artificial intelligence could uncover a classical attack on the algorithm, placing exposed Bitcoin public keys at risk. [1][8]
To mitigate the risk, Drake recommended a controlled migration of digital assets into fresh addresses. CryptoSlate and The Block both reported that these new addresses should keep their public keys hidden behind a hash. CryptoSlate noted that Drake advised large holders to move most of their funds. [1][2]
Bitcoin is a decentralized cryptocurrency that was invented in 2008 by an unknown person using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. Cryptopolitan reported that Drake believes artificial intelligence mathematics could break cryptocurrency signatures before quantum computing developments occur. [3][7]
