Software engineer Brandon Thomas has created free, open-source replicas of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint using Anthropic's Claude artificial intelligence model, Decrypt and KuCoin reported. Thomas published the tools on GitHub under the names WordCraft, GridCraft, and DeckCraft. The programs are licensed under open-source MIT and Apache 2 protocols, Decrypt reported. [1][3]
The release follows an earlier project by Thomas, who previously used artificial intelligence to build free clones of Adobe's Creative Cloud software suite, according to Decrypt and Futurism. Decrypt reported that the new software applications run fully offline as alternatives to paid Microsoft Office subscriptions. [1][6]
Microsoft Office was first announced by Bill Gates on August 1, 1988, at the COMDEX trade show, and initially included Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Adobe Photoshop, a proprietary raster graphics editor, was originally created in 1987 by Thomas and John Knoll. [7][8][9]
Decrypt reported that while the newly built software applications remain rough, the project demonstrates how accessible software cloning has become using artificial intelligence tools. [1]
