The Solana blockchain network is scheduled to replace its consensus mechanism on October 21. CryptoSlate, CoinDesk, and Bankless all report that the upgrade, named Alpenglow, aims to achieve transaction finality in roughly 150 milliseconds. Core developer Anza announced the mainnet activation date on October 13, CryptoSlate reported. Bankless added that according to the Solana Foundation, the consensus overhaul will activate at epoch 1064 on October 21 at approximately 15:00 UTC. [1][2][3]

The incoming system will replace TowerBFT, the consensus mechanism that Solana has used since its inception. CryptoSlate and Bankless both report that TowerBFT currently requires approximately 12.8 seconds to finalize transactions. CoinDesk noted that the updated timetable was published by the Solana Foundation. [1][2][3]

The technical changes will alter how network nodes process transaction data. CoinDesk reported that the upgrade will change the voting system for validators and remove vote transactions from blocks. This change could sharply reduce reported transaction counts even if user activity remains constant. Bankless reported that next week's release ships Votor, the new voting engine for Alpenglow, under which validators trade signed votes directly and aggregate them into compact certificates. The second part of the design, a block propagation engine called Rotor, requires a separate governance proposal. [2][3]

The transition requires a live consensus replacement on the mainnet. CryptoSlate reported that the process will rely on a coordinated validator handoff and network conditions to achieve its target finality. [1]
