Mainland Chinese equities have lost about 2.4 trillion dollars in total market value since May 2026, Decrypt reported. The decline comes as market participants lose faith that the artificial intelligence boom in Beijing will generate profits. Decrypt noted that the lost valuation exceeds the total annual economic production of South Korea. [1]
Artificial intelligence companies account for 42 percent of the market capitalization of Chinese equities listed on the mainland and in Hong Kong, according to figures from Goldman Sachs cited by Decrypt. Those firms also account for 57 percent of total trading volume. Decrypt reported that this concentration has caused the broader equity market to decline alongside falling artificial intelligence share prices. [1]
The sell-off was compounded by external pressures, according to Decrypt, including trade restrictions imposed by the United States and high American interest rates. The CSI 300 index, which tracks the 300 largest listed firms on mainland Chinese exchanges, entered a bear market on October 22, 2026. A separate report from Hokanews noted that Chinese artificial intelligence stocks specifically lost 480 billion dollars as investors reassessed valuations. [1][2]
Market bubbles driven by artificial intelligence investments have expanded globally since 2025. Financing for the sector shifted toward the bond market alongside 3 trillion dollars in off-balance-sheet commitments by 2026. Historically, Chinese stock markets experienced major corrections, such as the 2015 to 2016 market turbulence where Shanghai equity values dropped by 30 percent over three weeks. [3][4]
