Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded outflows in seven of eight market crashes

A new DWF Labs report shows United States spot Bitcoin funds consistently shed capital during major market declines, counter to expectations that institutional investors buy the dip.

United States spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded net capital outflows during seven out of eight major market selloffs since launching in January 2024, CryptoSlate reported. A report from DWF Labs found that spot Bitcoin funds consistently lost capital during market declines of 15 percent or more. The data challenges widespread industry expectations that Wall Street institutional investors would absorb price drops and buy market dips. [1]

The study also revealed that spot Bitcoin funds attracted inflows across all nine major market rallies since their launch, according to CryptoSlate. DWF Labs noted that while institutional products have not prevented redemptions during sharp market contractions, the broader entry of traditional finance vehicles has helped make selloffs less violent overall. [1]

The report coincides with strong short-term volatility in cryptocurrency markets. Cointelegraph, CoinDesk, and The Block reported that spot Bitcoin funds drew 528 million dollars on Wednesday, led by BlackRock and Fidelity products. Cointelegraph cited SoSoValue data showing that funds brought in 1.08 billion dollars across three consecutive trading sessions, lifting net October flows back into positive territory at 461 million dollars as Bitcoin briefly topped 84,700 dollars. Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds are exchange-traded investment products that hold digital assets directly and trade on traditional stock exchanges. As FTMQ Crypto reported earlier, Bitcoin faced downward pressure during broader equities selloffs earlier in October, with prices slipping toward 82,000 dollars as market volatility increased.
