The parliament of Greece has approved a new digital asset tax framework that imposes a 10% capital gains tax on cryptocurrency profits. Decrypt, CoinDesk, CryptoSlate, and Cointelegraph all reported that the legislation also establishes a 15% levy on income generated from staking, crypto lending, and decentralized finance. The rules apply to individual investors whose net annual crypto gains exceed a €500 threshold, which Decrypt calculates at approximately $557. [1][2][3][4][5][10]

The crypto tax provisions sit inside a broader Ministry of Finance legislative package that covers debt servicing, financial oversight, and government accounting, Decrypt reported. According to CoinDesk, investors will have a 12-month period to declare past cryptocurrency gains without facing late-filing penalties. However, Decrypt and CoinDesk both noted that lawmakers have left legal questions surrounding token-to-token swaps unresolved. [1][2]

A cryptocurrency is a type of digital asset that relies on distributed ledger or blockchain technology to facilitate secure transactions. Decrypt, CryptoSlate, and Cointelegraph reported that the newly passed digital asset income rules are scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027. CryptoSlate added that further administrative directives concerning transparency standards and tax audits are still forthcoming. [1][4][5][11]
