The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority has approved the country's first retail bitcoin exchange-traded fund. Bitcoin Magazine, The Defiant, and The Block all reported the regulatory decision on Tuesday. Bitcoin exchange-traded funds in Switzerland were previously available only to institutional and qualified investors, according to Bitcoin Magazine and The Block. [1][3][6]
The watchdog cited growing public interest in cryptocurrencies, particularly bitcoin, as the reason for the decision, Bitcoin Magazine reported. The approved fund holds bitcoin directly, according to Decrypt and Blockchain News. [1][4][5]
To allow the retail product, FINMA granted an exemption from standard diversification rules, The Defiant, Decrypt, and investingLive reported. The regulator balanced this waiver by imposing strict custody requirements and demanding clear warnings for investors regarding price volatility and the potential for financial losses, according to The Defiant and Decrypt. [3][5][12]
Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency that relies on cryptography rather than central authorities. Initially designed as a medium of exchange, it has developed into a store of value. The new Swiss product follows earlier listings of crypto exchange-traded products in the country, as reported by The Block. [6][14]
In short
- FINMA approved Switzerland's first spot bitcoin ETF for retail investors.
- The regulator waived standard diversification rules for the new fund.
- FINMA mandated strict custody safeguards and explicit risk warnings about volatility.
