Net losses from cryptocurrency hacks have reached approximately $2.35 billion so far in 2026 after accounting for freezes and asset returns. Bitcoin Magazine and Bitcoin Magazine Markets both reported the figure, citing data from Lightning.news. Security researcher Stacy Muur compiled data showing that 230 protocols suffered hacks exceeding $50,000 year-to-date. [1][2]

The largest losses stemmed from centralized hot wallets, governance exploits, bridges, and sidechain code rather than hardware wallet breaches. Bitcoin Magazine Markets reported that the largest individual losses included Bitget at $387.5 million, Liquid at approximately $320 million, KelpDAO at around $292 million, and Drift at $285 million to $296 million. September accounted for about $768 million in losses. [1]

As FTMQ Crypto reported earlier, cryptocurrency losses from hacks reached $1.18 billion in the third quarter of 2026, marking a 55 percent increase from previous levels. Smart contract exploit losses rose significantly during that quarter, while access control and operational losses dropped by approximately 30 percent. [10]

Cryptocurrency assets rely on distributed ledger technology to execute secure transactions. Decentralized finance applications deliver financial instruments through smart contracts on permissionless blockchains, removing traditional intermediaries. However, coding errors and software hacks remain a persistent vulnerability across the ecosystem. [7][9]
