North Korea has denied responsibility for a massive cyber theft targeting cryptocurrency exchange Binance, pushing back against accusations from United States law enforcement. Cointelegraph, CryptoSlate, and the Wall Street Journal reported that Pyongyang rejected claims blaming its state-backed operators for the attack. CryptoSlate noted that North Korea issued its denial through state news agency KCNA after the FBI attributed the security breach to the cyber group TraderTraitor. [5][6][8]
Cointelegraph reported that Kim Yo Jong characterized the allegations by the United States as politically motivated. Reporting across outlets varied slightly on the financial scale of the breach, with CryptoSlate and 24/7 Wall St. citing a six billion dollar theft, while CoinDesk Markets and 24/7 Wall St. reported the figure at 6.3 billion dollars. The attack stands as one of the largest cyber exploits recorded in the digital asset sector. [1][5][6][11]
United States law enforcement previously attributed the record Binance exploit to North Korea's TraderTraitor group, as FTMQ Crypto reported earlier. Previous reporting showed attackers moved stolen assets through cross-chain bridges, including 140 million dollars off the Tron network, with bridge protocol Relay handling 48 million dollars of the transferred funds. [16]
Political reactions to the federal law enforcement findings have begun to emerge in the United States. 24/7 Wall St. reported that Donald Trump publicly questioned the FBI's assertion that North Korea executed the Binance heist. Pyongyang lies in the northern half of the Korean Peninsula and serves as the capital city of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. [11][12]
