An Ethereum address connected to the April exploit of crypto trading platform Drift transferred tens of thousands of Ether into the Tornado Cash mixer on Tuesday. CryptoSlate reported that the address transferred 25,710 ETH in 258 deposits. Cointelegraph, Decrypt, and CoinMarketCap both report that the wallet moved 25,700 ETH into the service over roughly two hours. Decrypt and Crypto News valued the transferred cryptocurrency at approximately 61.56 million dollars, while The Defiant put the total value moved at 54.8 million dollars. [1][2][3][4][5][7][9]
Decrypt reported that transfer data from Arkham Intelligence shows the funds were deposited in fixed batches of 100 ETH, worth about 237,800 dollars each, along with smaller 10 ETH chunks. These deposit sizes match the fixed pools of Tornado Cash, an open source cryptocurrency tumbler that obscures transaction trails by mixing funds so they can be withdrawn from fresh addresses. [4][10]
The incoming transactions marked the first outgoing transfers from the address following two months of inactivity. Cointelegraph, Decrypt, and Crypto News all reported that the original Drift Protocol attack in April caused approximately 295 million dollars in total losses. Cointelegraph and Decrypt reported that an investigation by Mandiant attributed the April heist to a North Korean threat group. [1][2][3][4][9]
The exploiter continues to hold significant cryptocurrency assets across related addresses. CryptoSlate and Cointelegraph both cited on-chain analysis platform Lookonchain as reporting that linked addresses still hold around 81,454 to 81,864 ETH. Decrypt reported that the attacker controls roughly 198 million dollars in remaining funds, while Cointelegraph put the value of the remaining holdings at approximately 194 million dollars.
